In 1946, the first foreign student, a citizen of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Chiang Kim Su, entered the Odessa Medical Institute (the name of that time).
In general, in the history of teaching foreign citizens at the Odessa National Medical University, there are three stages. The first – since 1946. Till 1961 – preparation of doctors for countries of national democracy, the second – since 1961. Till 1991 – training of medical personnel mainly for the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America; The third – since 1991 until now. This is a period of training on a contractual basis for all interested foreigners, including CIS citizens.
The first phase training was carried out on the basis of international treaties, the second – on the basis of intergovernmental, inter-party coordination and communication between civil society organizations and trade unions, the third stage is connected with the collapse of the USSR and the CIS inability to perform previous agreement.
The appearance of the first stage of a small number of students from European countries practically did not change the organizational structure of the educational process. Foreign students joined the existing groups and studied together with Soviet students.
The emergence of students from countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America has led to significant changes in the system of teaching foreign students, therefore, in 1964. The Institute has a dean’s office for working with foreign students and a department of the Russian language (1969).
In 1979 The institute was appointed Vice-Rector for International Relations.
Since 1990 The faculty prepares graduates – non-citizens in internship, magistracy, postgraduate studies, doctoral studies. In the same year, advanced training courses for foreigners began.
In 1992, a preparatory department for foreign citizens was opened, where students are trained in Russian and Ukrainian, and improve basic training in physics, chemistry, biology.
After passing the final exams, students of the preparatory department and get a state certificate can be enrolled for the first course chosen specialty Odessa National Medical University or other higher education institution in Ukraine.
Since 1996, the university, the first in Ukraine, has been open to training doctors in English, and later in the Fraz-speaking languages.
Foreign citizens acquire knowledge and skills in the latest medical technology, endoscopic, laparoscopic, maxillofacial, plastic surgery, transplantation, tissue therapy, implantology and others.
University priority at this stage is to expand direct relations with other countries based on mutual agreement, which is aimed at further integration into European and global medical structures to study the best practices in the field of medical education and research.
Since 1946, more than 7 thousand foreign citizens from 58 countries of the world have been educated at the faculty. Many graduates of the university have become leading specialists, heads of medical institutions, regional services, and educational institutions.
At present, the university enrolled more than 1,000 foreign citizens have the opportunity to enjoy high-quality information services and modern new electronic student library to study books that are written by professors of the University and published in publishing ONMedU. Continuing the tradition of educational work with foreign students in ONMedU operates an integrated approach to learning and international education fully developed personality, which aims to create a favorable atmosphere, good conditions for training and comprehensive and mutually enriching review of our countries, their history and culture.
The current educational work with foreign students has been repeatedly identified by the Honorary Diplomas of the Youth Policy Department, the Office of European Integration of the Odessa City Council, the diplomas of the Office of Nationalities and Religions of the Odessa Regional State Administration, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps of different countries.
