In 1946, the first foreign student – citizen of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Kim Jang Soo has been admitted to the Odessa Medical Institute (former name of ONMedU).
In general, in the history of education of foreign people in Odessa State Medical University has three stages.
The first – from 1946 to 1961. – Training of doctors for the people’s democracy.
The second – from 1961 to 1991. – Training of medical personnel mainly in Asia, Africa and Latin America, and the third – from 1991 till now. This period of training is a contractual basis for all interested foreigners, including citizens of the CIS.
At the first stage of training was carried out on the basis of intergovernmental agreements, on the second – on the basis of intergovernmental, inter-party coordination and communication between NGOs and trade unions, the third stage is associated with the collapse of the Soviet Union and The CIS’s inability to perform the former arrangement.
At the initial stage, not many students from European countries hardly changed the organizational structure of the educational process. Foreign students entered into existing groups and studied together with Soviet students.
The emergence of students from Asia, Africa and Latin America resulted in significant changes in the education of foreign students, so in 1964 it was created dean, dedicated to working with foreign students, and later, the Department of Russian Language (1969).

The University’s Library is one of the oldest in the country and has a book fund of a million copies. It is an informative center that can provide students with the necessary information in an accessible form.
A new students’ library is a modern building that has been working since 2008. It provides students not only with traditional paper textbooks, but it became one of the first in Ukraine electronic library for medical students.
A comfortable, spacious reading room and computer room can give up to 130 students at a time. Thus, all 130 places of the reading room are informatively active in the wireless network. The students can come with their own laptops and get any necessary information. It is possible to get it also on any electronic media.
What information are we talking about? For the first time about electronic textbooks. The reading room has more than 70 electronic textbooks, the authors of which are leading scientists of our University. In addition, there has been created a full-text database of these textbooks on fundamental disciplines, the number of which in a paper format is limited in the library. Today, every student can get on his computer “Human Anatomy Atlas” in 4 volumes by Sinelnikov, “Human Anatomy” by MG Pryvis, “Pharmacology” by DA Kharkevitch, “Histology” by Yu. I. Afanasyev, “Pathological Anatomy” by OI Stroukov and VV Serov and a lot of other textbooks of the total amount of about 1 thousand titles.
There was created an electronic educational literature catalog with the help of a special automated system “Irbis” connected with the library’s general electronic library, which allows a student without leaving the room of the educational library to find and order any book, which Is available in the general library fund.
It will help in case of preparation for the abstract, and also those students who study in the scientific groups and learn profoundly one or another theme or discipline. The Internet will help in this case as well; It works in the library regularly.
Our electronic library is proud of the databases of University departmental materials to help students in their self-training. There are already 57 databases. They are available for all the specialties and are created in English, Russian and Ukrainian languages. These databases have texts of lectures, methodical elaborations and recommendations after some sections and themes of educational disciplines, tests to modules and preparation for state testing and other materials to help students.
All the information can be obtained online from home computers.
Each student has his electronic subscription with a personal code, which corresponds to the number of a student ticket, and the process of receiving and leaving books takes several minutes.
The electronic library also has full-text databases of rarity editions, which are kept in the library’s library. And there are quite a few of them – 2.5 thousand unique books. Among them D. Mendeleyev, MI Pirogov, L. Paster, I. Sechenov, Ch. Darwin, S. Botkin and many others.
The library blog helps students to get answers to all the questions.
The University is not only a educational but also a scientific establishment. And the library should worry about that both scientists and students, who prepare for scientific future, and graduate students, and magistrants had all the necessary scientific information in full volume. The library of the University subscribes annually to 400 scientific medical journals. It is a great amount of information, which is hard to work with, especially if it concerns the search for a concrete subject.
Today the electronic library can offer an electronic catalog of all articles of medical journals of Ukraine and Russia since 2006. Moreover, articles published in all magazines which subscribed to the University since 2007 are available in full-text electronic format.
It is quite simple to use the electronic library. One should have elementary skills in computer work for it.
